Idea Overview:
Making new friends through apps can be hard and degrading, especially with such a big focus on looks and limited information. Instead, we plan to match users based on interests, characteristics, personality and life experiences to create a more human experience. No more swiping left or right - instead, users will be matched on what they have in common and encouraged to have deeper conversations based on this. If wanted, suggestions will be made on where users can meet based on their preferences - such as a coffee shop if both introverted.
Who might use it/where it might be used?:
Loneliness is experienced by a number of people, particularly the younger generation aged 18-24. However, loneliness and having a lack of friends does not discriminate and is also an issue faced by single parents, migrants, people who have moved to a new city, those who have caring responsibilities, or those who are unemployed. The ability to list these life experiences and characteristics in biographies will help create understanding and community with those in similar situations.
The Market:
Business to Consumers (B2C)
Sector the idea belong to:
Home & Personal
Why you think there is a demand for your idea?:
Loneliness is a huge issue across the UK, with 9m adults saying that they are often lonely. Additionally, there has been increasing concern as to the impact of social media on mental health. The number of close friends that people claim to have is falling - and technology should be used to help solve the problem - not worsen it, such as the case with several social media apps today.
Who would be the ideal customers?:
Ideal customers would be people in the age ranges of 18-35. In particular, those who have moved to a new city, or have just started at a new university, or generally find themselves in difficult situations with no one to get help and support from in hard times. Members of the LGBTQ community, migrants and single parents are often lonely too, not having many people to turn to given their circumstances.
What ideas do you have to reach these customers?:
Unsure on marketing at the moment, but partnering with councils is one option to increase awareness. Volunteering and community projects can help reduce loneliness and depression, and councils and charities often struggle to advertise opportunities.
How far have you developed this idea:
I have gotten in contact with a few people who have written blogs about their experiences using friend-finding apps, and they have supported the idea and given positive feedback, such as supporting the idea of suggesting group activities and places where users can meet. Additionally, the focus on improving mental health has been well-supported.
What – if any – feedback have you had for this idea so far?:
I have spoken to a few of my friends in the target age range, who have supported the idea, as they realise that young people can often feel lonely despite the increasing online connection.
What supporting material – if any - would you like to add to your proposal?:

This idea ticks a lot of boxes. I really like the focus away from being selected by looks and for it to be a genuine alternative to shallow dating sites. I think this will also appeal to the over 50’s age group who are looking to make new friends with shared interests. Are there any sites out there that do anything similar?

With every thing which appears to be building within this subject matter, a significant percentage of opinions tend to be quite refreshing. However, I am sorry, because I do not give credence to your entire plan, all be it radical none the less. It seems to everybody that your comments are actually not totally validated and in reality you are generally your self not even wholly confident of your assertion. In any event I did appreciate examining it.
